Asian Carp - Alive and Deadly - Preface USSFN 8/17/03 - The common carp, introduced by European immigrants in the 1800’s as a food fish, has become so widespread in the U.S. that in most areas it is considered part of the native fauna. The fear is that in time the other four Asian carps will become as widely distributed and abundant, wreaking widespread havoc with native fish and shellfish habitats and foods*.Just ask yourself...have you ever seen a bass, walleye, trout, salmon, etc. in Oriental works of art? Clearly, the answer is no...simply carp/sunfish. If these Asian carp are not kept in check, what kind of future can we expect for sportfishing? Already, officials in the Great Lakes area are trying to figure out what to do about these species. Great Lakes fishermen should prepare for what could be a catastrophic future for sportfishing there. ~ Jim *Source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service |
