Float Tube Trip Success  by Jim Bess
"Required Reading for anyone planning a fishing outing" - USSFN

USSFN:  7/08/2002 - There is something about a float tube trip that brings up images of one-on-one battles against your quarry that overall make the trip more intriguing. As I had explained previously my time was limited so planning was very important.

As shown above I met my time planning goals with time to spare, which I used to finish off a breakfast sandwich I had bought from a local gas station. As the sky began to lighten I made my way to the water. Prepared with all the items mentioned before my float tube was packed and it was only necessary to carry my rod with my other hand.

Reaching the water not knowing that where the local snakes were I decided to throw my trusty buzz bait. As always it provided me with the excitement me I was looking for as my first cast brought on a very hot three-pound bass. In the darken sky I would have sworn it was a five pound fish obviously the Spiderline not providing any stretch made for increased action. The darken skies would provide two more fish both just under the three pound range.

As the sun rose I made may way into the water and began to work my way into the flooded grassy coves. As I expected the Chartreuse Glass Minnow took charge and in a big way. From this point forward I should say I lost track of exactly how many fish I was catching. It seemed from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. as I fished what I would call the unreachable areas fish after fish came until I had exhausted twenty Glass Minnows. The twenty Bass Assassin Minnows were also used up to the 11:00 a.m. pre-planned quitting time.

Just as I started to make my way back to my starting point I noticed Bass ranging from one pound to five pounds jumping out of the air and feeding on orange and black dragonflies. Knowing that I had previously determined that 11:00 a.m. was quitting time it was necessary to make a decision. The executive decision was to continue fishing thirty to forty-five minutes just to see if those crazy bass jumping as far as three feet in the air would bite my lures.

It did not take long to figure out that they did not want anymore-soft jerk baits. After trying several other options I got to Strike Kings “Wild Thang”. Since I did not have Orange and Black I tried the Black Neon color. The school that was working the area was very particular though and would only strike the lure on its way down or when it was just about to hit the surface. This made for a lot of action but my arm was ready to fall off in the forty minutes I was working the method. It did bring my largest fish weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces and it was while I was skipping the lure across some patches of grass.

Well the newly appointed quitting time had arrived and it was time to go. With an outstanding day of “catching” fish and no leaks, or issues with snakes or turtles I can truly say the day was a success. This will most likely be the last time I will be able to float the Meecham Airport Nature Area as the water has already reached the level where there will soon not be enough water to move around freely. It should be noted that it was difficult just moving in the areas I was working in on this day of fishing. And this day brought most likely over seventy fish, anywhere from a 1 pound to my largest fish 7 pounds 2 ounces
