Hurricane Lil Forces Choices for Louisiana Fishermen USSFN: 10/3/02 - Everyone knows not to forget what is most precious to them when evacuating before a major storm like the one expected to hit central Louisiana this morning. Hurricane Lilly is almost upon us here in LA, but it's causing fishermen to evaluate what to take with them. You would almost think that we're hosting a bass tournament or boat show here in Shreveport as many "down-staters" have elected to bring their boats with them. They might need them to get back to their homes. Reports of nine inches of rainfall in just 45 minutes confirms that there will be some major flooding down along the coast. With forecasts of up to 20 ft waves pounding land, I don't think I'd want to be there to watch them. Still, there are other reasons fishermen have brought boats. The fishing prospects are excellent here with so many bodies of water close by. The Red River offers about the best fishing right now even though it's been a little slow this week. Cross and Caddo lakes are close and producing. SHELTER NOTES: Black Bayou State Park (located about 8 miles north of Bossier City on Airline Drive) has camping and RV sites and even a few cabins available still. Other choices for those still seeking refuge are Barksdale Air Force Base, Ruston, LA Shelter, and Marshall, TX Shelter. Those evacuees bringing livestock and RV's may also seek shelter at the Louisiana Fair Grounds at the Line Ave. exit off I-20. WHILE IN SHREVEPORT: Okay, so your stuck in Shreveport for a few days...what's there to do? You've actually picked a pretty good time to visit even under the worst of circumstances. The Red River Revel is going on right now (Spring St. exit on I-20) featuring art, good food, and great entertainment. Also downtown you can find museums, Sci-Port, the Imax Theater, the new riverfront district of shops and restaurants, and of course our five riverfront casinos. At the time of publication, Hurricane Lil has been downgraded to a level 2 hurricane fortunately. All of us at USSFN hope for the best for our neighbors to the south. - Jim |
