Ouachita Parish Visitor's Alert

USSFN 6/14/03 - Visitors to Northern Louisiana might want to read this Visitor's Alert from the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District.  This was published  to "make visitors aware that the West Nile Virus is prevalent throughout the state of Louisiana.  As of early May, there have already been both birds and mosquitoes which have tested positive for WNV in Ouachita parish."

"Even with the abatement measures that are being taken by the staff of the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District, it is very likely that you may still encounter mosquitoes as you go about your outdoor activities.  As a precaution, we strongly encourage you to follow the safety suggestions listed below.

  • Try to limit outdoor activities after dark as much as possible.

  • If you must be outside at night, wear loose fitting, light weight clothing; i.e., long sleeve shirts and long pants.

  • Purchase and use, according to directions, a good mosquito repellent.

  • If you are camping, check to see that screens on your RV are in good repair.

  • Check tents and repair any small tears that you find.

  • Consider burning citronella candles as a deterrent when involved in night time activities.

If you desire more information you may contact the OPMAD at 318-323-3535."
