Record-Breaking Gar in Mississippi

USSFN 10/08/03 - So you're bored with your normal fishing?  'Want to go after something bigger?  Well, Mississippi has some whoppers just waiting for you.  These waters have Shortnose, Longnose, Spotted, and the giant Alligator Gar.

In fact, two state records were set this year.  Earl Stafford, of Natchez, MS, must have had the fight of his life when he landed a 215 lb. Alligator Gar in the Mississippi River near Natchez.  Anyone familiar with this species can appreciate what it must have taken to bring this one in!

The second record was broken when Greg Sarringar, of Greenville, MS, nailed a 5 lb. 8 oz. Spotted Gar at Lake Lee on May 8th to capture his place in history.

Some states consider these species to be a nuisance, but I'll bet these two anglers have some memorable moments as a result.  Congratulations to both of you. - Jim
