Texas Golden Algae Killing Millions USSFN: 4/25/03 - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPW) officials confirm the latest outbreak of this dreaded bloom. Golden Algae blooms turn the affected water yellow or even dark brown. However, they also release a toxin that affects the ability of fish to breath through their gills. Fish can and do migrate away from the infected water, but they have no room for escape as the algae spreads throughout a lake. The latest outbreak at Lake Whitney has killed almost 500,000 fish. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done other than to restock the fish.~ Jim |
