Wal-Mart FLW Update: "24 Pounds Could Win It" Shreveport, LA: 9/5/02 - That's the prediction of Top Pro Angler, Pat Fisher, referring to the upcoming Wal-Mart FLW Championship. Pat and his co-angler, John Bruce, will be representing Team Allsouth Fishing sponsored by the Allsouth Sprikler Company. These two are in town early trying to scout Cross Lake in preparation for the 9/11 tourney kick-off. The team was able to hook into a couple nice 3+ pounders yesterday, but predict it will will probably take about 8 lbs each day to win. John compares the FLW bracket format to that of an NCAA tournament. "It's not just total pounds" he explained with regard to the Co-Angler rules. While the team is guaranteed a paycheck for taking part, Bruce hopes that he can land enough each day to compete for the big money Friday. Fisher and Bruce, both from the Atlanta area, will be joining 47 additional teams next week in competing for their share of the $800,000 prize money. John expressed his concern about everyone hooking the fish during practice. Call it strategy if you will, but this team might not hook any more fish during practice so they will stay aggressive during the tournament. He also made mention of the low water level making things difficult on Cross Lake for everyone. However, as Pat said, "Somebody's gonna win it." despite the less than perfect conditions and water level. When asked how they felt about the tournament starting on "9/11", they both admitted that it hadn't crossed their minds until I made the connection. Pat related his experience last year during the tournament on September 11th when he didn't have a clue about the day's events until people started coming up crying and asked how they could be out fishing with everything that was happening. "Yeah, it'll be on our minds now" John admitted as they both proceeded to prepare their tackle for today's practice. Similar thoughts will probably be with all the participants and spectators alike. - Jim
