What's On Sale?

Here's the place to learn a new trick or two.  You might recognize something in here that you already do and never realized that other people didn't know about it.  Some of these are just common sense and might seem silly.  If you only learn one new technique or trick, maybe it was worth reading these.  Feel free to send in your tips & tricks to us in email or post them in our Sportfishing Forum.  Look for some of these to show up in the newsletter as well.  Naturally, you'll be given credit either way.

Tip, Trick, Technique, or New Idea

Cold Weather Clothing:  It's a good idea to wear layers in colder weather, but now there are a couple of tips that might make all the difference.  Cotton underwear, while great for summer wear, actually acts like a sponge in the wintertime trapping moisture next to the skin.  There are now many manufacturers that make undergarments from synthetic material.  Synthetic material serves to "wick" away moisture keeping the skin much warmer.  Another tip is to separate outdoor clothing when doing laundry.  Leave out the fabric softener when doing these.  Newer materials used in clothing can be "coated" with the fabric softener impairing the garment's ability to breathe.

Recyled Nylon Hose:   If you like fishing for catfish using chicken livers, and you're tired of losing your bait, try cutting a two inch square of some old knee highs, nylons, etc.  Put some bait in the middle and bring all four corners together.  Stick your hook through all four corners and bury it into the bait.  Your bait will last much longer and won't fly off the hook when you cast.

Clothing Tip:  When fishing streams and rivers during the dry season wear dark-colored clothing. Fish concentrated in the deeper pools are skittish, and will run for cover at the slightest provocation. Dark clothing blends in better with the surrounding tree line and vegetation.

Baitcaster Accessory:  If you use your thumb while casting, and who doesn't, you might have a tendency to develop a rub burn on it.  Try buying a leather thimble at a fabric or craft store.  They hold up well and work.  An alternative to this would be sports tape.  Sports tape is slightly tacky when you apply it but "sets up" quickly and forms a long lasting "thimble".  It can also be used for any other area where burns, blisters, or calluses develop after prolonged use.

Decoy Gets New Life:  If you're a waterfowl hunter, who also happens to fish, don't discard those old floater decoys.  Instead, spray paint them with a white base coat, then a fluorescent chartreuse or orange paint to use for a marker buoy.  They are much more visible than standard markers and you'll be the only one on the lake with one.   Clorox bottles can also be used.
Jim@USSfN   Shoe Repair Sharpener:  I know that this might sound silly, but a friend of mine always takes a fillet knife or two with him every time he has to go to the shoe repair shop.  They use a 2000 grit sanding belt there that puts a fantastic edge on his knives in just a few seconds.  He swears by them...especially since they don't charge him anything for it.
